- Pipeline transportation: Moving gas and oil through pipelines requires compressors to maintain or boost gas flow into the pipeline system. Since reservoir pressure and normal flow decrease gradually over time, compressors are used to keep gas flowing.
- Gas injection: Air compressors can be used to inject gas into oil layers to increase and maintain reservoir pressures, which help facilitate the recovery of crude oil. Air injection is used for transporting liquids, tank pressurization, cooling, plastic moldings, and the synthesis of various petrochemicals.
